Serum guanase levels in patients suffering from liver diseases in Kano, Nigeria

M S Sule, Z S Mohammed, R Lawal

Abstract

Serum guanase levels were determined in 20 healthy adults and in 90 patients suffering from liver diseases.  The guanase activity was assayed using a simple ultraviolet spectrophotometric method.  The enzyme levels in the normal adults and patients suffering from liver diseases were found to be 0.32 ± 0.13 U/l and 1.45 ± 0.41 U/l respectively.  The difference in the serum guanase levels in the two categories of subjects indicates that its evaluation could be used to diagnose liver disease inKano, like is being done in some other countries.
